    The system is used to tear large used lithium batteries or some modules into small pieces for subsequent equipment to continue processing. This machine shreds old batteries into smaller pieces, making them easier to transport.

     

    Common Technologies for Waste Lithium Battery Recycling Machines

     

    The most common techniques for recycling lithium-ion batteries are hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy. Hydrometallurgical processes begin by shredding batteries into a powder called black mass. The black mass is then leached with acid. Metals like co- balt, lithium, and nickel are separated out from the resulting liquid and converted into raw materials for batteries. Pyrometallurgical processes burn batteries in a furnace to produce a slag containing lithium, which isn't usually recovered, and an alloy of other metals, like cobalt, copper, and nickel. Those metals are then separated and converted into chemicals for battery production.


    Some processes shred the cells; sift out the plastic, copper, and aluminum that were in the cell body and current-collector foils; and use heat to drive off the organic solvents that carry electrolyte salts. These steps leave a sooty pile of granulated battery guts called black mass, containing cathode metals and the remains of the graphite anode. The black mass goes through hydrometallurgical processing, which uses strong acids and oxidizing agents to extract and separate metal salts. The salts are typically sulfates or hydroxides of nickel, manganese, and cobalt, along with lithium hydroxide or lithium carbonate.


    The alternative approach involves pyrometallurgy. In this process, cells are smelted in a furnace at up to 1,500 °C to burn off all the carbon-based components. The high temperature produces a mixed-metal alloy that includes cobalt, copper, and nickel, along with a slag containing manganese, aluminum, and lithium. Metals can then be recovered using hydrometallurgy. Pyrometallurgy tends to be cheaper than shredding and can tackle pretty much any kind of battery design or chemistry. But the heat also drives off lithium and reduces its recovery rate. 

     

    Components of Waste Lithium Battery Recycling Machine
     

    Shredder: The system is used to tear large used lithium batteries or some modules into small pieces for subsequent equipment to continue processing.

     

    Granulator: This machine shreds old batteries into smaller pieces, making them easier to transport.

     

    Pyrolysis system: This technique is used to remove diaphragms, electrolytes, organic materials, and other contaminants.

     

    Separator: This machine separates various materials found in old batteries, such as copper.

     

    Separation system: In various process linkages, separate black powder, shell, copper-aluminum combination, etc.

     

    Stripping system: The stripping system simultaneously separates the copper-aluminum mixture, the black powder, and the black powder on the separated copper-aluminum mixture.

     

    The tail gas treatment system: The pyrolysis tail gas is treated to meet environmental protection standards before being discharged.

    Lithium-ion Batteries are shredded and broken down into small pieces with a shredder and a hammer mill. The ground-up batteries are transferred to the shaker table. The table will separate mixed plastics and metals according to their weight and size. The slurry from the shaker table contains granular solids knows as "black mass". The slurry is then transferred and collected in the filter tank where it will eventually be processed by the Filter Press.


    ● Filter Press - Removal of the Black Mass
    The Filter Press uses pressure filtration to separate the "black mass" from the lithium brine solution. The slurry is pumped into the filter press where the black mass is captured between the filter plates. The filtered water/lithium brine is transferred and pumped over to the Evaporation System.
    Filter presses come in a variety of sizes ranging from 470mm to 1500mm, or 1 to 300 cubic foot capacity. The manifold and piping can be constructed using CPVC or Stainless Steel.


    ● Evaporation and Heated Tank System
    After the slurry is processed by the Filter Press, the remaining liquid or lithium brine is transferred to the temperature-controlled evaporation system. In this process, the Evaporator will evaporate excess water and concentrate the brine to a specified level. The concentrated lithium brine is then pumped to the mixing tank.
    Evaporator is ideally suited for dewatering solutions or wastewater that may have a high solids content. The evaporation system can evaporate at room temperatures with no added heat, or it can achieve evaporation rates as high as 40 GPH at the maximum temperature of 160°F. The heated tank systems are constructed with Corrosion Resistant Polyethylene, Stainless Steel, or Carbon Steel, and it is heated with electric coils, steam coils, or a gas-fired burner. The evaporation system allows you to automated evaporation with the control panel. The heated tank is outfitted with level controls, temperature probes, alarms, and other programmable logic controls.
    Evaporator and Heated Tank System has also been used to dewater and concentrate NMP (N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone), which is a common solvent when recycling lithium-ion batteries.


    ● Filter Press - Removal of the Lithium Carbonate
    After the lithium brine solution is concentrated to the specifications you desire, it is transferred to the mixing tank. Soda ash is added to lithium brine in order to precipitate lithium carbonate (Li₂CO₃). The solution is processed by the Filter Press where the lithium carbonate is captured between the plates, and the remaining liquid is discharged. Depending on your exact chemistry, the filtrate can be returned to the heated tank system for evaporation, thus creating a closed-loop zero liquid discharge system.
